roam & home’s CHICAGO TRAVEL GUIDE
CHICAGO – I have adopted [thru marriage] as ‘my kinda town’, I truly love living here & calling it home. As a consequence, we are frequently asked by visiting friends & family what do we recommend in Chicago. After endless email lists, we have finally decided to jot it all down.
Here is our take neighborhood-by-neighborhood of our favorite haunts. It is purely based on our personal favorites & only includes places we have actually visited. It is not meant to be an exhaustive guide of all-things available in Chicago, it’s just our 2 cents on what you should put on the EAT | SEE | STAY list. We will be updating as things close/open, and our taste changes.
We hope you enjoy Chicago as much as we do.
For those of you that want the options narrowed down to a smaller selection – here is the list for you. Check back we keep this list up to date.
WHAT TYPE OF TRAVELERS ARE WE? To give some perspective to what you will find in our recommendations, here is a little background on the type of travelers we are. Keywords include: architecture, design, unique, adventure, hotspot, old-school, off-the-beaten-path, local experience.
EAT | We love street food and there isn’t too much we won’t eat [restricted only by allergies], this is where we feel we meet the real characters of a country and experience the true culture. We seek out old-school restaurants, places that you literally can observe the history ooze from every crevice, & wish the walls truly did talk. We also choose places to dine because of their interior space not just the delicious food & drinks.
SEE | Museums & art galleries are always on our travel itinerary, but we have a 2 hr maximum at any one place before our A.D.D kicks in. We take in cooking classes, small group or private walking tours to better understand the history, architecture & food of wherever we are visiting. We always check out the supermarkets & pharmacies perusing the goods for sale. And we can not go without a visit to the local markets.
STAY | We like luxury & architecturally interesting accommodation that is beautifully designed inside & out. Modern, vintage, antique, we like it all, it just needs to be unique. We really want to feel more like house guests vs. a corporate traveler, we choose boutique hotels, B&B’s and for longer stays rent an apartment / house.
Things we avoid on our travels: coach tours, restaurants close to major tourist attractions [don’t eat on the square], visiting during the high-season, irish pubs unless you are in Ireland, and any of the American Embassies [Starbucks, McDonald’s, KFC etc.]. These are our preferences they work for us, your preferences may vary and that is OK.
